A teenager was stabbed in Thornton Heath yesterday after a row broke out between him and another player in a football game.

The 17-year-old had been playing in the six-a-side game on a hard court in Thornton Heath Recreation Ground at about 5.15pm, when he became involved in an argument with the player. The argument escalated and he was stabbed.

The London Ambulance Service LAS attended and took him to hospital with a stab wound to the upper body. He remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The incident was seen by a large number of people, but officers are keen to hear from anyone who can help identify the suspect.

He is described as a black man, aged between 20 and 25 years old, about 5ft 7in and has a distinctive large afro hairstyle. He was wearing a black and brown striped t-shirt, black jeans and trainers. He ran off towards Melfort Road.

The game was not thought to be part of a formal football league.

Anyone with information is asked to call Croydon CID on 020 8649 0090, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

After the outcry over the Grand Theft Auto stabbing surely now is the time to ban football for the sakes of all our our children?

Marco, you are joking. Football is about the only thing left for teenagers to do without too much stress. This suspect is a coward. And people should not be afraid of slimeballs like this. Enough people were there at the match. Incidently, he appears to be a man playing football with teenagers. Something wrong with him, not the beautiful game.

Oh what a suprise another black on black crime!
Why would this guy turn up to a football match with a knife?! And also Im sure everyone at this match knew this person yet will anyone shop him?! No of course not!

P Where in this report does it say that the victim was black? It doesn't!

And Trasie.. I'm pretty sure Marco was being sarcastic. But you are absolutely right, the guy's a complete coward. These boys love to play the "big I am" but cant take responsibility for their actions.

So much for the theory that all these thugs need is some organised activity to keep them occupied.

the black people refered to are the black individuals who think it is ok to carry weapons and use them on victims. i feel ashamed to be a black youth knowing so many today just want to be involved in crime.
