Police officers are on high-alert after linking the daylight town centre mob attack on two constables to one of Croydon's biggest criminal gangs.

At the weekend, officers were warned for their safety as intelligence sources claimed Don't Say Nothing (DSN) gang members were upset at recent police activity and were planning to retaliate.

A section 60 order, which allows police officers to stop and search anyone fitting a gang profile "in anticipation of violence", was issued by the duty superintendent across the whole borough to prevent armed attacks.

Officers from South Norwood's uniformed tasking unit (UTU) also patrolled the streets of Croydon stopping suspected gang members.

A section 60 order is likely to be in place this weekend.

The two officers were hospitalised with bite injuries and bruising last Wednesday after a 30-strong mob attacked them in broad daylight in the town centre.

The officers saw a teenage girl drop a fast food wrapper from a nearby takeaway and asked her to pick it up. She did so, but in a show of defiance, dropped it on the ground again.

When the officers asked her again to pick up the rubbish her friend became aggressive towards them and the officers had to call for back-up after getting quickly surrounded by an angry crowd of mostly youths.

Witnesses described the incident. Holly Charles, 16, a shop worker, said: "A girl was held down by an officer. The men jumped on that officer, hit and punched him to try to get him off her. The other officer pulled out a baton and pepper spray and sprayed the girl. He waved the baton around to stop the mob from getting closer.

"I thought someone was going to get seriously hurt. It was really scary. The police officers were not in control of either the schoolgirl or the men."

Charlie Giles, 21, who works at Phones4u said: "I saw an officer swinging his baton around trying to keep the crowd away from the other officer. The girl looked like she was resisting arrest and was screaming and shouting at the officer. It was mayhem."

Following the incident, Croydon Council told its own private police force, the Neighbourhood Enforcement Officers (NEOs), by email, not to tackle teenagers for fear of similar attacks.

But 24-hours later council officials back-tracked on the order, claiming a junior officer had issued the email without authorisation.

Croydon Council and the police issued a joint statement, claiming the town centre was safe. It said: "It is deeply unfortunate that a small minority of people have sought to prevent the police carrying out their duties. This is a highly unusual incident but it will not deter us from taking action against antisocial behaviour and low-level criminality.

"Over the school holidays we will continue to police the town centre firmly but fairly so that all can enjoy the activities on offer."

Why do these stupid kids have to spoil it for everyone? All she needed to do was pick her litter up, now it have moved on to a section 60 order and people walking in groups will now be under suspicion of being a gang.

Tag gang members and ban them from being in the town centre after 8pm and ban them from being in town with more than two people at a time.

I see, so Croydon Council's "own private police force" is going to tackle only the majority law-abiding population concerning one of the thousands of trivial by-laws. Well, we wouldn't want them to be doing anything actually useful (while drawing their council-tax paid salaries), would we?

So much for those such as Mike who want us to believe that this poor little girl was set upon by police "thugs". The re-dropping of the litter was a provocative act directed at authority. This, the root cause of this country disappearing down the plug-hole. All New Labour can do while this is going on is involve us in other counties' wars.

And Mike from Birmingham on another thread yesterday, was seriously suggesting the two police officers should have picked up the litter themselves into shaming the innocent schoolgirl... Labour/Tory politicians won't be worrying about what happens in Croydon or anywhere else blighted by moronic behaviour as they start their 7 weeks of summer holidays, these MP's really ought to be ashamed to call themselves 'honourable member's'... this country needs people who are prepared to take on the thugs of British society and get our streets back to what they used to be like. Too many Mike's of this world are actually running this country with their liberal, pandering, ways at the moment - hence the mayhem.

I feel sorry for the Police. They are just trying to do a Job in a demoralised force. They have to put up with insults assault etc. But when you need them its a case of thank you officer. Low Pay,Low Morale. Unfair recruiting techniques which favour Ethnics in recruitment as well as in promotion. You should be promoted or recruited on the ability to do the job colour or ethnicity shoul not come into to it. The CPS just letting criminals off even though they are blantantly committed the crime. Then we have the overpaid councellors etc a new way of employing numpties that if they went tomorrow would not be missed. Except the ones employed in berievment councelling.Give back the Police the authority to do the job. Remember they are human as well and a needed part of society.Lets get back to the Dixon of Dockgreen era. Where Policemen where seen as protectors not just traffic cops.

The sad state of this once-great country isn't down to any political party. I recently watched a 15 year old episode of The Bill, and couldn't believe that we had low life feral scum then. A year before Blair became head of Labour.

Hey? the Bill, thats ficticious. Are you being serious Ricky?

I was told by a police officer that The Bill has nothing in it which remotely resembles the real police.

Am I the only person who has noticed that this gang is a double negative? They're called "Don't Say Nothing" which surely means "say everything"? Which theoretically means they should be squealing to the police continuously?

So this band of semi-literate children intend on retaliating do they?

Who do they think they are?

I look forward to seeing the resultatant Met stickfest when these cowardly, demented and sadly deluded examples of Croydon's youth decide to make utter fools of themsleves.

I did see Mike from Birmingham ?? disapeared when this news item emerged!! rofl!! it blew away his theory that these 'innocent' schoolgirls were picked on by the police in Croydon for no reason at all when infact these morons were part of the anti-police/authorit
y mob who were upset they couldn't rampage around the streets of Croydon anymore, because the cops have had a clamp-down on theit activities.
It's the Mikes of this world with their rose tinted spectacles who make life just that little bit more difficult than it needs to be with their liberal namby-pamby complaints in support of those minority morons who spoil it for everyone!!

ANNE GILES, SELSDON says...

And now it appears that the dear little girl objected to the officer telling her to remember that she is just a little girl, as she felt belittled. Mummy has now made a complaint. I suppose her teachers are not allowed to tell her off either, in case she feels belittled. A 14 year old girl is a little girl. End of story. Have some respect for the officer, little girl.

I'm afraid the police have been a little softly, softly, for far too long in Croydon... it's not the beat officer's, it's usually the directions from senior police officer's, these people if the truth be known, are massively busy dealing with the shocking murder rate in the captail.

There could be around 40 police officer's on each murder case drafted in from surrounding areas to deal with the present mayhem - it gives each borough a skeleton police force to deal with day to day problems... I don't think many people realise how stretched our police force really is.

We need politicians to show they care about what happens in our areas... forget the show-boating that many of these MP's endulge themselves in, like cutting the ribbon of a newly opened charity shop, we want to see them donning the compulsary MP's stab-proof vest and being on the transport late at night to get a feel of things!!

I think the public should DEMAND action from MP's over the level of violence on the streets of Greater London.

MP's burying their heads in the sand hoping the public just swallow the behaviour of some of these morons should be reminded that they will be booted out at the next election unless they start getting involved in 'nasty-politics' to sort out the problems.

Very nice post Scoffer, sounds like you are in the know and I think it is very important for people like you to speak out. The politicians are hiding/sweeping alot of stuff under the carpet so the public cant see what is really going. Someone said, just yesterday I think, that London is now more dangerous/violent than Los Angeles(USA.

scoffer, Beckenham says...
1:44pm Sat 26 Jul 08

Yes that is true HolySmoke... we are becoming more like the USA, the guns, the knives, etc, the scum strutting around with their **** hanging out thinking everyone owes them something, of course in the States you'd get 90years in jail for half the stuff that goes on over here.

MP's are now on their summer holidays and won't be back to 'work' until the first week in October... I think the public are now getting more resentful towards these honourable member's more so than ever.

The one thing to really hit home to those of us midly interested in politics is the scandal of MP's allowances, perks, etc... these people bang on about what a wonderful 'democratic' society we live in in Britain, then they all club together in Parliment to try prevent us the public from finding out all about their diabolical fiddles that would mean the sack and prosecution if we did that in our workplace... is it any wonder that MP's of ALL parties in Britain are now looked at as dodgy spivs out for all they can get and not giving a toss about this country or it's people.

And when this Government just sits on it's backside and says nothing as energy companies like EDF raise their prices 25% you get the feeling we are in for a rocky winter and beyond... let's hope these b'stards enjoy their ten weeks holidays... we are in a changing political climate... every MP should be worried they could lose their job.
