Webb confident of restoring Molesey feel-good factor

Steve Webb is aiming to put the smiles back on Molesey fans' faces after relegation to the Combined Coutnies League last season, writes George Alderman.

The manager's first step is to try to make a winning start to the new campaign, after a distastrous 2007-08 season in which they notched just three victories.

"We want the club to have more of a feel-good factor, which should come with more victories," Webb said.

"If we can get a good start, it should help us to attract some quality players to the club."

Webb's quest has been helped by the retention of several first-team players, along with the acquisition of some new signings.

So far, the Moles have 10 players registered for the coming season, and hope to double that number by the weekend.

Webb has been pleased with the players' attitude and ability in pre-season.

He said: "Players have come in and they have proved that they want to do what is necessary for the club to succeed.

"We hope to get together a squad of players who want to play for the club and this team ethic may give us the edge."

One of the key factors in Molesey's demise has been financial problems, but Webb believes they can still compete with the league's richer clubs.

"Some clubs are spending a lot of money so they expect to win but money doesn't always buy success," he said.

"We feel Molesey is the best club in the league in terms of facilities, which should help us attract quality players."

While Webb is intent on gaining promotion back into the Ryman League, he conceded it would not be easy.

"The plan is to try to win the league because we want to get into the Ryman League again," he added.

"In reality, a top-six finish in our first season wouldn't be a disaster as long as we were able to push on from there the season after."
